Murder, She Wrote

Welcome to Central Coast Library's reader's advisory themed month: female accidental sleuths!

It is an unfortunate and long-running trope in crime fiction as a genre; the dead blonde, the murdered girl, the promiscuous teen that 'had it coming'. Too often the bodies of women are tossed aside as mere plot devices or catalysts for further action. This list, collected by our Reader's Advisory team here at Central Coast Library, aims to bring to light new and older titles that put their female characters in the spotlight, and that emphasise their agency in crime solving.

We've tried to cover all sorts of sub-genres: cosy crime, hard-boiled Nordic noir, young adult, historical fiction, and even more. We hope that more seasoned readers can find a new title to love, and that new readers feel comfortable to jump into a genre they may once have felt alienated from. Happy sleuthing!
