Immediately after being discharged from psychiatric hospital, reporter Camille Preaker is faced with a troubling assignment: she is to return to her tiny hometown in the wake of the murders of two preteen girls.

Contact with Camille's neurotic, hypochondriac mother and even the eerily beautiful, charismatic half-sister hardly known to her has been near nonexistent for decades. Now, she finds herself once again in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, and can't help but find kindred spirits in the murdered girls whose untimely deaths she has returned to cover. Hounded by the demons of her past, she must unravel the psychological minefield of her own mind if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

Sharp Objects is a darker read, and not for the faint of heart. Camille's relationships, the sex, the depiction of society in which she lives-- all are complex, flawed, slightly tinged with the unhealthy spectre of trauma and psychological illness. A challenging but rewarding read for hardened crime enthusiasts, Central Coast Library offers both the paperback novel and the audiobook editions.
